What Does Your Life Look Like? Exploring Your Circle of Life

Updated: Nov 7

Do you ever feel like something’s missing in life, even if things are generally okay? Or maybe you’re aware of areas where you’re thriving but want to bring balance to other parts? The Circle of Life exercise is a powerful way to visually assess different areas of your life and discover where you can focus to feel more fulfilled. This exercise will help you identify areas where you might need to invest a bit more time, energy, or intention to bring harmony into your daily routine.

Step 1: Map Out Your Life Satisfaction

To start, you’ll look at the Circle of Life chart, which divides your life into categories like Spirituality, Creativity, Finances, Career, Health, Relationships, and more. Here’s what you’ll do:

1. Place a dot on the line in each category to indicate your current level of satisfaction. Place the dot closer to the center if you feel unsatisfied, or towards the outer edge if you feel content and fulfilled.

2. Connect the dots to create your personal Circle of Life. This gives you a clear picture of where your life may be out of balance.

Once you’ve connected the dots, you’ll likely see some areas where you feel more satisfied and others where you might feel less fulfilled. This is an opportunity to reflect on where you want to focus more energy to bring greater balance into your life.

Step 2: Identify Your Imbalances

With your Circle of Life in hand, look for the areas that need attention. For example, maybe your Social Life is near the center, indicating dissatisfaction, while your Health and Creativity are thriving. Think about where you could invest time and energy to create more harmony.

This isn’t about creating a perfect circle but about understanding which areas could use a little TLC. Over time, even small changes can create meaningful shifts in your overall satisfaction.

Step 3: Journal About Your Results

This part of the exercise allows you to dive deeper and start creating intentions around each area. For each category, reflect on the following:

1. Where You’re At: Write about your current level of satisfaction and why you feel that way.

2. Express Gratitude: Take a moment to recognize and be grateful for what’s going well in each area, even if it’s not perfect.

3. Balance Goals: Consider what small or large changes would help you feel more balanced.

4. Set a Goal and a Reason: Think about one specific action you can take to improve that area, and write down why it matters to you.

5. Feelings Upon Reaching the Goal: Imagine reaching your goal. What feeling would you experience? Write that down and use it as motivation.

Example: Social Life

Let’s say you place your Social Life dot closer to the center because you feel less connected with friends and family. Your journal entry might look something like this:

"I have been less social since starting school and miss spending quality time with family and friends. I’m grateful to have such loving and supportive people in my life who understand my busy schedule. I’d like to spend more time with them to feel more connected and supported. My goal is to reconnect with loved ones by hosting a weekly Zoom coffee hour for my long-distance friends, and arranging monthly Nibbles and Crafts gatherings in my Tiki Lounge for local friends. I also plan to visit family over the holidays. Reconnecting will fill my heart with joy and give me a sense of community and love."

Incorporate the Circle of Life Monthly, Yearly, and Beyond

You can revisit this exercise as part of your monthly goal setting, use it to reflect on your yearly goals, or even look ahead five years to consider your long-term dreams. Tracking your Circle of Life over time allows you to see your growth, identify trends, and adjust goals as your needs change.

This exercise doesn’t have to be perfect, and it’s normal for different areas of life to shift in importance. Embrace the journey, and remember, small changes can have a profound impact on how balanced and fulfilled you feel.
