about Velvet Umbrella Records
Velvet Umbrella Records was born from a desire to protect, empower, and uplift artists, especially those who’ve weathered storms the industry often ignores. Co-founded by Gala Violet and Studio TeaZilla (Tea Kinsington), this indie label is more than just a place to publish music, it’s a sanctuary for creators.
Here, we believe artists should own their work, find their voice, and be supported in every step of the journey, from the first lyric to the final mix, from album art to Bandcamp pages, show posters, promo graphics, and beyond. We offer hands-on help for independent artists ready to bring their music to life, especially those who’ve felt silenced, broken, or overlooked.
Many of our artists are Spoonies (living with chronic illness), survivors of industry trauma, or creatives who’ve been pushed aside by band politics, gatekeeping, or toxic scenes. At Velvet Umbrella, we’re reclaiming space and raising our voices. Because music should be healing, for both the artist and the listener.

Velvet Umbrella Records was created as a refuge, for the misfits, the Spoonies, the dreamers with bruised hearts and brilliant songs. Founded by Gala Violet and Studio TeaZilla (Tea Kinsington), we’re an indie label dedicated to helping artists publish and distribute their music without losing their voice, vision, or rights.
We support artists in reclaiming their creativity with:
• Help publishing & distributing music
• Album art & design support
• Bandcamp & streaming setup
• Event posters, promotional materials
• Encouragement through the hard stuff: trauma, illness, or industry scars
This isn’t just about music. It’s about healing through creation, and finding our voices after silence.
Our Mascot: The Opossum
Our little opossum friend isn’t just cute, he’s a symbol. Opossums “play dead” to survive, and so have many of us. We’ve been silent, shut down, or shut out. Velvet Umbrella is a call to wake up, rise up, and make noise again. It’s time to stop playing dead.
Why We Exist
Many of our artists have survived things the music industry rarely talks about: rape, abuse, gaslighting, misogyny, chronic illness, toxic bandmates, or gatekeeping that crushed their spark.
Some were told they weren’t marketable. Others were never even given a chance.
At Velvet Umbrella, we believe:
• You don’t have to be “perfect” to be powerful
• You deserve ownership of your work
• Music should be made on your terms
• Art is sacred, and so are you
This is a place for artists who feel broken, healing, weird, wild, or too tender for the world. We’re building a soft rebellion. One song at a time.
